I always imagined the background chorus were the soldiers from the war,those who have fallen and those who have passed and now she joins them all together finally in peace, R.I.P Vera Lynn
During WWII, Vera Lynn would sing this to the troops that were about to be sent into battle and some of them would not come back. It gave them courage to meet their fate, one way or the other, and to know that their sacrifice is and was worth what they were about to encounter. This song helped them to believe that they will meet up with their loved ones in another life and they need not worry about those left behind. May God bless each and every man and woman who endured the trauma of that terrible war. May it never be repeated.
We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when;
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day.
Keep smiling through,
Just like you always do
'Til the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.
So will you please say "Hello" to the folks that I know,
Tell them I won't be long.
They'll be happy to know, that as you saw me go,
I was singing this song.
We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day.
We'll meet again
Don't know where, don't know when;
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day.
Keep smiling through,
Just like you always do
'Til the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.
So will you please say "Hello" to the folks that I know,
Tell them I won't be long.
They'll be happy to know, that as you saw me go,
I was singing this song.
We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when;
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day.
I was born shortly before WWII and my father and his 3 brothers all served in the Army throughout the war. I vividly remember on the rare occassions they were all at home on leave at the same time the wonderful get togethers and sing alongs of all our families and how Vera's songs were sung with real passion. Great sadness at her passing and so many wonderfull memories. She will be so sadly missed truly the end of an era. RIP
