It's so much faster and, guitar-wise, less lyrical than Nick Drake; I don't hear it at all. Both great artists, but not really similar at all.

punk simplicity IS the beauty of UT. simplicity is the essence of rock, that's why everyone remembers smoke on the water, hey jude and hang on sloopy, and not anything joe satriani or yngwie malmsteen ever wrote. but anyways.. much respect to Wilco/Tweedy.. i'm just more a fan of UT.

Can anyone help me out here? What does the metaphor of "black eye" in this song? Does that mean the hurts inside of those veterans who came back after the war? Thanks.

One of Uncle Tupelo's greatest songs--and there were so many good ones.

Am I the only one that hears a little bit of Nick Drake in this?

Every one of Wilco's albums in the late 90s/early 00s -- Being There, Summerteeth, and YHF -- are better than anything UT ever did. And I love Uncle Tupelo. You just can't compare the restrained genius of a "Far, Far Away" or "Just Friends" to the punk simplicity of "Long Cut." Was UT more influential? Sure, maybe. But Wilco was Jeff Tweedy hitting his songwriting stride with the best arranger he could have had in Jay Bennett.
