I look back at this and I'm just amazed at the raw talent that was mainstream in the 90's. Really wish i would have appreciated it more during that time. Extremely hard to articulate the feelings that some of these songs bring back.

A nice little murder ballad to start my day.

The 3rd last line, 'she's out there on her own, and she's alright' I'm putting it out there, Sunny isn't alright. Burning the house down won't fix what happened to her years earlier. (If I'm analysing the lyrics correctly)

The 90s had a lot of really amazing female artists.

I love this song! For me this song is about liberation - of departing a mentally abusive relationship five years ago, separating myself from toxic acquaintances and relatives, and gaining the wings to fly (out of state hopefully soon) to have an even greater peace of mind. Thank you Shawn for this beautiful song!

I get chills when I hear the line "Sunny came home with a vengeance"

No joke, I searched for this song for over 20yrs. I remember first hearing it when I was 9. I had a little handheld battery radio and Id listen to our local station at night in bed before sleep, thats where I heard this song. So Id tune in the next night to hear it repeated...it was great, but I had no way to access the song. Only found it a few years ago after it came back to my memory! I also remember another hit I loved, a song called "under the water" by Merrel Bainbridge. I miss those simple days so much, you have no idea.....

Shawn Colvin is from Greenup County, KY. That immediately brings on closeness from me. The house that my GG-grandfather built there was bought by Roy Ogden Judd, Naomi Judd's grandpa. If she knows South Shore in that county, she knows King's Addition, my family's land. I loved this song in the 1990s, and I loved the video and the way she performed it. I loved that it won song of the year, and I hated the way her acceptance of the award was interrupted. But I loved and always will her class.

my guess.......a married mother tired of her unfulfilling life......maybe she found a list of names her husband was cheating on her with......grabbed the kids and set her husband & house ablaze........eitherway it's a beautifully strange song that caught my ear years ago.......;-)

This melody was stuck in my head for 16 years, since the time I was nine. It would keep popping up in my head at least a few times every month and I'd think "God, what is that song!" I finally heard it in an Irish pub in Thailand, I leaped up and yelled "That's it! That's the freaking song!" I feel relieved now. Very pretty song.

I've been feeling nostalgic lately, listening and watching videos of that remind of AOL, dial-up internet, Win95/98/2000/ME... but one video in particular that dug deep into my 30-something year old brain and brought it out after decades??? had this song barely playing in the background. It was a video for the launch of Windows 98 at a CompUSA store. I fucking miss the 90s, mates. It hurts me thinking that we can never experience a time like that again. It's well behind us in the rear view mirror.

physically and emotionally abused by my stepdad at a tender age, i have watched this on mtv and that day i decided enough, packed my bag and left that miserable house which was subsequently torn down by a tornado..never looked back after that day. im doing fine now. thanks for this song.

If you have ever been abused you will understand her words "count the years you always knew it" and "I'm walking on a wire "

"Count the years you always knew it, strike a match go on and do it." literally the most powerful line in the chorus. You could feel her rage and her need for vengeance.

This is the sweetest sounding song about arson and murder ever. Of all time.

There were so many good mainstream female artists and singers popular in the 90s it's not even funny - Shawn, Sarah McLachlan, Tracy Chapman, Melissa Etheridge, Annie Lennox, Lisa Loeb, Jewel, Sophie B. Hawkins, Suzanne Vega, Meredith Brooks, Sheryl Crow, K.D. Lang, Abra Moore, Alanis, Amanda Marshall, Dolores O'Riordan, Tori Amos, Joan Osborne, Tasmin Archer, Natalie Merchant, I'm sure I'm leaving out a ton but it was such an inspiring time to be a female teenager growing up. They sang about a variety of issues and they were confident, strong women, I feel very lucky that I grew up in that time.
