I was only eight years old in 1960 when I heard this for the first time on the car radio. I remember trying to hold back my tears so my father wouldn't see how soft I was.
Tragically in 1977 I lost my dear friend Laura in a tragic Automobile Accident she was only 17 years old and this song was sung at her funeral. I had known her since grade school in Michigan. R.I.P dear friend you're gone but not forgotten.
God this reminds me of Sunday afternoons when my mum would be cleaning the house with the radio on and I would come in from out playing and hear all the wonderful 60s songs. I wish there were a british radio station which played music from this genre because its hardly ever played now which is a shame.
my mother used to play this song when i was younger, too young to even understand the words, but it used to make me weep
i'm 19 now and it still makes me cry
Laura and Tommy were lovers
He wanted to give her everything
Flowers, presents,
But most of all, a wedding ring
He saw a sign for a stock car race
A thousand dollar prize it read
He couldn't get Laura on the phone
So to her mother, Tommy said
Tell Laura I love her
Tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura I may be late
I've something to do, that cannot wait
He drove his car to the racing grounds
He was the youngest driver there
The crowed roared as they started the race
Around the track they drove at a deadly pace
No one knows what happened that day
Or how his car overturned in flames
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck
With his dying breath, they heard him say
Tell Laura I love her
Tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura not to cry
My love for her will never die
Now in the chapel where Laura prays
For her poor Tommy, who passed away
It was just for Laura he lived and died
Alone in the chapel she can hear him cry
Tell Laura I love her
Tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura not to cry
My love for her will never die
Tell Laura I love her
Tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura not to cry
My love for her will never die
Wow, what has happened to pop music? This stuff had class and really moved you. This music all sounds the same now and these artists have nothing original to offer. What a difference when you go back 50-60 years. Seems like ages ago.
