my father was 52 when I was born, i am an only child. he never stated the burden, or showed it on his face, he was a working man and made things happen. I wish I could have matured fast enough to have enjoyed this song with him. Blessings to you and your father, and mine, maybe they know each other in the great beyond.

sharecroppers dude. that's what this song is about. my grandparents did this for a living in TN. the bosses would have rifles to make sure nobody would take any of the crops. anybody who has had relatives who have done this for a "living" during the depression feel this song intensely.
