Interesting to listen to this vibe-based version let by Mr. Hampton. I was familiar with the single (1942) he recorded with his orchestra, which was quite differently arranged. It was completely dominated by his saxophonist, Illinois Jacquet, and the vibes were mostly in the background. Both are worthy.
If there is a guaranteed way to kill a big band tune, introduce the vibes, an insipid, weak, gutless intruder into an otherwise big, beefy, warm gutsy outpouring.
At 4years old I was featured along side Lionel while doing this tune ! The most rememberable part was when we both jumped on the floor toms ,side by side with the smoke boom going off at the moment. , ( you know the one ) bam bam bam bam bam bam bam Boom ! What a memory .
