What a pathetic jerk Leadbelly is. At no time in American history could you (black or white) ever get your freedom by paying the executioner. This song dates back nearly a thousand years to pagan laws where a debtor could be hung and his body be sold for animal feed. Hey geniuses, this is a centuries old Scottish English folk song, therefore Led Zeppelin being of Welsh and English origin has more claim to this song than anyone else who recorded it including the Harvard musician Childs.
