Although the Starliters were certainly an early racially integrated group, The Crests (led by Johnny Maestro) and the Del Vikings preceded them by several years. But, not only was the "Peppermint Twist" a great, ground-breaking song, but without Joey Dee there never would have NEVER been a Young Rascals. David Brigati (on the right) is brother of Eddie Brigati (who sang with the Rascals.) More importantly, the vocal harmonies of the Rascals are derived directly from The Starliters' harmonies. Just compare the harmonies in this song with "Good Lovin." As for Joey's head, I saw him in concert last night in Clearwater, FL and spoke with him after the concert. For the record (no pun intended) his head is absolutely proportional to his body. To suggest otherwise is sheer ignorance and stupidity.

Why can't we have these kinds of songs anymore? I wish it where the 50s and 60s again. I wonder if the Leave it to Beaver gang liked this music?

This song is so good and so superior to the awkward “Hey, Let’s Twist”, which was probably a response to the Chubby Checker phenomenon.

None of you folks know what your talking about. I'm the "white boy" playing organ on this video with Joey, Roger, Dave, Sam and Wille. This was on the Dick Clark Show. And the names of the people who are listed as writers of the Peppermint Twist never wrote a thing. They stole the rights from Joey and it took many years to get redemption. This was the best version of Joey Dee and the Starliters and was ground breaking in civil rights. We all could write a book of our experiences in those years.

Saw these guys in person (a million years ago) Also went to the Peppermint lounge during in it's hay day. Went a few years later and it was a local dive. How the mighty fall. Sad!!!!

Hendrix played with Joey Dee and The Starliters (1965) and so did Joe Pesci, believe it or not, in 1962.

I danced with the singer on the right. At The Irvington House, Irvington,NJ. He was so handsome. The Peppermint twist was a great song.

I remember. Joey Dee (Dinicola) was a friend of my best friend's older brother, when I was in 8th grade on the "North Shore" of Milwaukee. Somehow it was arranged that Joey Dee and the Starliters played for my class of 57 kids at a private party at the Lincoln Park Pavilion, for well over an hour, in May 62' - when Peppermint Twist was hot. At one point, I walked outside with my girlfriend. The sound pouring out of the open windows was huge. We noted that we would never forget that moment.

All the comments about the size of heads and bodies: This is filmed in "kinescope"...Which means that a camera was pointed at a television screen...Remember that this is 1962 and television technology was still evolving. We should be so lucky to have this great footage! Stop being so critical and enjoy the music!
