This song amazingly captures both humor and an honest look at the devastating grief of loss and does them both justice. With perfect vocals and steel guitar to boot. Hot damn.
This is the classic old country song, so much better than the soft rock they try to pass off as country today. They used a Dr. Pepper can for the special effects.
We would make chains out of the pop tabs where I grew up near Reno, Nevada. It would make my mom madder than an old wet hen when she would come in my room to find one stretched along a wall from a weekend party in the Tahoe National Forest, lol. It's hard to believe that the late 60's was that long ago. Those great old songs were a mainstay in my life, and for some forty years my dad a I played them at country dances.
My dad's been gone for nine years now, and I can no longer stand the taste of beer...but oh, what memories.
I wish we could send out petitions around the country to see how many real country music fans are out there and bring it (Merle, Jim Ed, Tammy, Loretta) back to our "Country music" stations! Probably sounds stupid, but there it is! Maybe even get some artists to record some of the old stuff and get rid of the crap they pass off as country today.
Wish I knew a good ol country bar that I could go sit in, pop a top, put a few quarters in the jukebox, and load it up with great songs to play like this....ohhhh good ol country. New stuff sucks.
