What’s the price? What’s the edit?
I’m alive
I don’t credit the source
I just drive
And then the fog rolls in
And then they’re blind
My enemies
They’re just trying
Trying to kill me
Breaking the waves again
And though I try
The ocean is strong
I cannot stem the tide
Breaking the waves again
And though I try
I can’t seem to stem the tide
Although I try
I try
Try — try me two times
I’ve got the time
And it’s been too long
Since I’ve been driving all night
On the back roads winding
Under the stars
That are slowly dying
Oh no
Breaking the waves again
And though I try
The ocean is strong
I cannot stem the tide
Breaking the waves again
And though I try
I can’t seem to stem the tide
Although I try
I try
Jack-knifed
On the side-street crossing
I’m still alive
And that’s something
And when I die
There will be nothing to say
Except I tried
Not to waste another day
Trying to stem the tide
My brain went from a banal Tuesday morning in mid-September to a magical Christmas morning in December within an instant of hitting play. This is some sort of magic only Deerhunter is capable of.
Naturally people are going to whine about it not being sonically adventurous, noisy, or punk enough but they don't understand how artistry works. Good and genuine artists are making music for who they are at that time in the world and space they currently occupy. They can't make the same music they've made before and while some try they just can't come close and it ends up sounding somewhat empty and tired. If you want a sound you've already heard before then go listen to their old music and if you want something similar find other bands who are doing more sonically adventurous, noisy, and ambient rock.
Don't complain about artists who continue to evolve and create unique music, they don't make music to appease you and your personal taste. They're expressing themselves and if you don't appreciate it then move on. I think this is a beautiful song that shines but with a very deprecating and affirming message about living and how it amounts to nothing but we keep on pushing forward because it's either that or die. It holds so much below the surface and it really speaks to the power of will and the forces that try to break us. Listen deeper and you might understand what is being expressed.
Glorious sound, bigger, clearer, more uplifting, brighter, yet still somewhat morose, aka still Deerhunter. So proud of my boys, this release is gonna be their biggest to date, and they deserve all the accolades they receive. A band of musicians grow with time and if they are artists, so does the music. It's a mature sound. Big credit goes to producer Ben Allen for instinctively knowing what Bradford and Co. were trying to achieve, and then taking them there. And the duet I'm sure will not be the last. Perfect blend of harmonies and layering guitar effects. Deerhunter4lyfe!!!
I just noticed this in the descript:
"Photographed and Edited by Bradford Cox
Additional Photography by Lockett Pundt"
It makes me so happy that Bradford is an artist in so many ways. he's a beautiful creature.
