Jan. 31st, 2020. Rainy and 40 degrees here in Augusta, GA. Dreary and lonesome. Cuts to the bone. It makes you wonder, makes you think. Music is the heartbeat of your life and soul.
Written by the late Tony Joe White of "Polk Salad Annie" fame, this soul classic proved to be a powerful comeback for Brook Benton. At the time, he had been a significant soloist in the late '50s and early '60s but hadn't had a Top 40 hit in more than six years until he released this single 50 years ago this spring. Brook's impeccable interpretation of the lyrics here is such that you actually feel the wet and cold in his voice. "A Rainy Night in Georgia" is an underrated masterpiece in every way.
When I hear this song, I think of someone driving in a car late at night with the rain falling softly. He has been gone 32 years now and still touches the soul! You were one terrific singer Mr. Benton!
I was on night duty as an MP at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, in the early 70's. It was raining and appropriately this song came on the radio and my partner and I just relaxed and sang along in the moment. I still get chills and my mind goes back to that night when I hear it. It is amazing what a song will do to our memories and emotions.
I recently learned that my mother was a Brook Benton groupie. After she passed away, I went through a trunk and found a Brook Benton fan club card with her name on it. RIP mom.
This song is an absolute work of art from beginning to end. First, his voice - it is deep and smooth and powerful enough to cut through steel. Next, the lyrics - vivid storytelling by a person who knows loneliness, poverty and grace. The music and instrumentation evokes so much emotion that your heart and mind are working in overdrive together. Add it all up and this song is worth any drug one could buy and any therapy one could offer or seek.
