In 1973, after failing to take antibiotics to protect his heart It subsequently weakened his body affecting one of his heart valves. On December 11, he had open-heart surgery to repair the two artificial heart valves. A five-person surgical team worked for over 6 hours to repair his heart. Shortly after the surgery ended on December 20, 1973 he died in the recovery room without regaining consciousness. He was only 37 years old.
