It's just past midnight, Wednesday, October 3. Tuesday morning, Dave Davies wrote his moving, heartfelt memories of and tribute to Tom Petty on Facebook, and it really meant a lot to me that one of the musicians I admire most, Dave Davies, was as deeply affected by Tom's passing - another of the musicians I admire most - and Dave shared that with us, right at the time when we really need to mourn together as a community and support each other in our grief. What a beautiful thing for Dave to do. The loss of Tom feels personal, because his music has been a huge part of my life, the source of so much enjoyment, and the soundtrack to many, many of my happiest memories. God bless Tom, and God bless Dave - we love you both - our lives are richer because of you. This song and others by The Kinks clearly were an influence on Tom - you can hear in this song how it must have been an inspiration for his music with The Heartbreakers and The Wilburys. This sounds like it could have been a song by Tom and The Heartbreakers - but of course it was originated by The Kinks, groundbreakers, quintessential rock and roll band with a lot of the best lyrics and music ever written.
